GateThe Value of the Past: A Symposium on Marketing and History

Friday 19 January 2007
12-4pm
Lilybank House, University of Glasgow

This symposium will examine the intersection of marketing and history, studying a variety of relationships between the two practices. Looking at specific case studies and general trends, speakers will cover both the history of marketing and the marketing of company histories. We will emphasise the ways in which historical artefacts of trade (such as advertisements and illustrations in a variety of media, trade cards and catalogues, pamphlets, consumer education campaigns, testimonials and endorsements) are useful both in crafting business history and also as contemporary marketing tools. As marketing materials often reflect the relationship between firms and consumers, they are also sites to learn more about consumer response to products and services over time. We will explore the value of documents originally intended to be ephemeral, and discuss conservation of and access to these materials in corporate and other archives or in other forms such as the internet. Questions and commentary from the audience will be encouraged.

The symposium is sponsored jointly by the Centre for Business History in Scotland and Seed Money, a research project supported by the Arts and Humanities Research Council and the Economic and Social Research Council through the programme on Cultures of Consumption.

There is no fee for the event but pre-registration is required, by 12 January 2007.

To register, please send an email with your name, affiliation, and contact details to: seedmoney@arts.gla.ac.uk; further queries may be sent to the same address.
